Schadau Castle, Gothic Revival castle in Thun, Switzerland
Schadau Castle is a Gothic Revival structure located on the shore of Lake Thun in Thun, featuring pointed arch windows and ornamental limestone details throughout its exterior. The building houses exhibition spaces, a museum focused on Swiss food culture, and a restaurant with lakeside views.
The castle was built between 1846 and 1854 as a private residence in the 19th-century Gothic Revival style. It has since been converted into a public museum and cultural venue open to visitors.
The castle houses the Swiss Gastronomy Museum, which displays how cooking traditions and dining customs have changed over time. Visitors can see kitchen equipment, recipes, and table settings that reflect different periods of Swiss food culture.
The castle sits directly on the Lake Thun shoreline with parking available nearby and easy walking access from the town center. The on-site restaurant serves meals and afternoon tea, though advance reservations are recommended for groups.
The castle displays a panoramic painting from 1814 created by Marquard Wocher that captures a typical morning scene in historical Thun. This work is among the oldest surviving panoramas of its kind and offers visitors a rare view of daily life in the town from two centuries ago.
