Schloss Sandegg, Medieval castle in Salenstein, Switzerland
Schloss Sandegg is a castle ruin on a hilltop in Thurgau canton with stone walls from different building periods. The structure shows architectural features that reflect various phases of construction and modification over time.
Early settlement at the site dates to the 8th century when a Frankish official named Sintlaz lived there. The castle underwent various modifications through the centuries and ended with a fire in 1833 during renovation work.
Religious leaders used the castle as a residence, including Abbot Albrecht who lived there while his monastery was being rebuilt after 1235. This connection to the church shaped the site's importance in regional life.
The ruin has been closed to visitors since 2005 due to unstable walls and collapse risk. You can still view it from a distance and enjoy external views from the surrounding hilltop area.
The castle's final destruction came in 1833 when a fire broke out during renovation work as fresh paint was being dried with excessive heating. This accident ended the building's existence for good.
