Schloss Königsegg

Schloss Königsegg is a castle in Reichenau with a square footprint, three stories, four corner towers, and a gabled roof positioned along Schlossstrasse south of Mittelzell. Its facades display features from different centuries, with the structure taking its present form through various renovations over time.

The Herren von Königsegg built the castle around 1560 as a stronghold in the region. A century later, Prince-Bishop Johann VII von Konstanz carried out extensive renovations that shaped its present-day appearance.

The castle blends medieval foundations with romantic-style alterations from the 1800s, visible across its walls and towers. This combination of building periods shows how different owners left their mark on the structure over time.

The building now houses the IB Medical Academy and remains closed to visitors, but the surrounding park welcomes people year-round for walks and outdoor time. The park offers a good sense of the property and its surroundings from the outside.

The castle changed owners multiple times, passing from religious communities to private individuals before the Reichenau municipality took over in 1922. These ownership transitions shaped the various building styles and renovations visible on the structure.
