Münster St. Maria und Markus

The Münster St. Maria und Markus features a three-nave basilica structure with a Gothic choir and houses numerous medieval architectural elements from different periods.

Founded in 724 by the wandering monk Pirmin with support from Karl Martell, the monastery expanded from a wooden building to a stone structure by the 8th century.

The church treasury displays reliquaries and religious artifacts dating from the 5th to 18th centuries, including the original shrine of Saint Mark.

Individual guided tours operate daily at 12:00 PM between April 20 and October 20, with advance reservations available through email contact.

The church contains the burial site of Charles III, the last ruler of the united Frankish Empire, with his gravestone inscription reading CAROLVS III IMPERATOR † 888.
