Church of St. George, Romanesque church in Oberzell, Germany.
The Church of St. George is a Romanesque church on Reichenau Island in Lake Constance, Germany. It has thick stone walls, rounded arches, and a simple floor plan with a nave and a choir.
The church was built around the year 900 as part of Reichenau Abbey, which grew into an important religious and cultural center during the Middle Ages. The monastery became known for the production of illuminated manuscripts and attracted scholars from across Europe.
The wall paintings inside the building date from the 10th century and show scenes from the Acts of the Apostles in strong, still-visible colors. Few examples of early medieval painting of this kind survive north of the Alps in comparable condition.
Reichenau Island is connected to the mainland by a road causeway, so no ferry is needed to reach the church. It is worth checking current opening times before visiting, as they can vary by season.
The church houses a relic said to be the head of Saint George, received as a gift during medieval times. This relic drew pilgrims to the island for centuries, making the site known well beyond the local region.
