Burg Schopflen, Medieval castle ruin in Reichenau, Germany.
Burg Schopflen is a castle ruin on Reichenau Island featuring stone walls that remain visible in their original form. The remains clearly show the construction of a fortress with characteristic defensive openings in the stonework.
The fortress was built in the 11th century under the direction of the abbey and was later rebuilt in the 14th century. After its destruction, only the stone walls remained standing as they exist today.
The fortress was a landmark of the island for centuries and shaped how the landscape appeared from the lake. Today, visitors can observe how the ruins reflect the long relationship between the island settlement and its religious community.
The ruins can be reached via Pirminstrasse on the island and are accessible for viewing from outside. A nearby observation platform offers good views of the remains and the surrounding landscape.
The fortress originally stood as a water stronghold completely surrounded by the lake and defined the island's character. Once the Reichenau causeway was built, it lost this water-bound quality and became part of the landmass.
