Wollmatinger Ried - Untersee - Gnadensee, Nature reserve at Lake Constance, Germany
Wollmatinger Ried - Untersee - Gnadensee is a protected area on the western shore of Lake Constance, lying between the city of Constance and the Reichenau peninsula. It covers reed beds, wet meadows, and floodplain woodland along the banks of the Untersee and Gnadensee.
The area was placed under protection in 1938, making it one of the oldest reserves on Lake Constance. In 1976, it was recognized as a Ramsar wetland, a status that ensures protection under an international agreement.
Along the marked paths, visitors can watch reed birds such as the marsh harrier or the great crested grebe at close range. On calm days, the sound of bird calls carries clearly across the open water and reed beds.
Access is possible along marked paths, such as those near Hegne campsite and along Reichenauer Damm. Parts of the reserve are closed to visitors to protect sensitive areas, so it is important to stay on the designated trails.
The reserve contains several small, uninhabited islands such as Triboldingerbohl and Langbohl, which most visitors never reach because entry is not allowed. This isolation is precisely what makes them valuable nesting grounds for water birds.
