Castell Castle, Stately home in Tägerwilen, Switzerland.
Castell Castle is a stone stately home on the Seerücken ridge near Tägerwilen in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland. It sits within a large estate of fields and forests, with views toward Lake Constance and the island of Reichenau.
The castle was extensively renewed in 1725 and then rebuilt between 1878 and 1894 by architect Emil Otto Tafel in the Neo-Renaissance style. This transformation reflected the architectural tastes of wealthy families in eastern Switzerland during the 19th century.
The name of the estate traces back to a noble family that shaped the property over several generations and left a clear mark on its layout. This connection is still visible today in the way the buildings and the grounds are arranged together, facing toward Lake Constance.
The castle is privately owned and operates as a working agricultural and forestry estate, so access for visitors is very limited. Anyone wishing to explore the grounds should find out in advance which areas are open to the public and respect the working activity on the property.
Inside the residence there is a replica of the Moorish hall from the Alhambra in Granada, a Mediterranean detail that few visitors expect to find in a Swiss building. This room gives a very direct sense of the exotic interests that the 19th-century owners brought back into their home.
