Schloss Wolfsberg, Ermatingen, Baroque castle in Ermatingen, Switzerland
Wolfsberg Castle is a Baroque structure situated on a hilltop surrounded by forests and orchards near Ermatingen. The main building is enveloped by formal gardens with geometric flowerbeds and gravel paths that lead toward the residence.
Wolf Walter von Gryffenberg commissioned the castle's construction in 1571, establishing its original form. Johannes Zollikofer purchased the property in 1731 and undertook extensive restoration work that shaped the structure as it stands today.
The castle grounds feature two notable outdoor sculptures by Henry Moore and George Richey, positioned within the U-shaped colonnades that face the surrounding landscape. These artworks create a conversation between the building and the natural setting around it.
Individual visitors can explore the garden grounds without charge, though groups must arrange in advance for guided castle tours. The gardens are most appealing during the growing season when plants and flowerbeds are at their fullest.
An iron turret clock dating to 1540, crafted by Laurentius Liechti, remains mounted on the west wall of the castle library. This rare timepiece is one of the oldest still-functioning examples of its kind on the property.
