Burg Nivagl, Medieval castle ruin in Vaz/Obervaz, Switzerland

Burg Nivagl is a castle ruin perched on elevated terrain in Vaz/Obervaz within the Albula Region of Grisons. The visible stone foundations and wall fragments reveal the structure of a medieval fortification positioned on high ground overlooking the surrounding landscape.

The fortress was built and controlled by the Free Lords of Vaz from the 12th through the 14th century as a key strategic stronghold. It functioned as one of three major power bases for this noble family across the Alpine region.

The ruin served as a seat of power for the Free Lords of Vaz, who used this hilltop to display their authority over the surrounding valleys. The remaining stones tell the story of how medieval lords made their presence known across the Alpine landscape.

The ruin is reachable via marked trails in Vaz/Obervaz with clear views best enjoyed in daylight hours. The ideal visiting season extends from spring through autumn when pathways are easily walkable.

The castle was one of three seats of power for the Free Lords of Vaz, alongside Loewenburg and Castle Belfort. This network of three strongholds allowed the family to manage control over vast Alpine territories more effectively.
