Burg Rossberg, Medieval castle ruins near Winterthur, Switzerland
Burg Rossberg is a castle ruin near Winterthur in northeastern Switzerland, located on a hilltop above the Töss valley. The surviving walls are remnants of a rectangular residential tower, whose foundations were uncovered during archaeological investigations.
The castle was first documented in 1169 and belonged to the Counts of Kyburg. The Rossberg family occupied the estate through the 13th century, after which it disappeared from historical records.
The site bears the name of the Rossberg family, who lived here for generations and shaped the area. Visitors today can see how a small noble family made their home in this region.
The ruins are accessible via a hiking trail from Kemptthal, as vehicle access is restricted to protect the site. The terrain is relatively open and easy to traverse on foot, though the ascent requires some physical effort.
In the 16th century, a dowser named Martin Offner from Sierre searched the entire site for buried treasure and dug up large portions of the original structure in the process. This treasure hunt left deep marks that remain visible in the shape of the ruins today.
