Frankfurt Airport, Commercial airport in Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt Airport is the largest commercial aviation center in Germany for passenger traffic and operates four runways alongside two main terminals covering approximately 2,300 hectares. The site includes multiple cargo facilities, administrative buildings, hotels, and a network of access roads and rail tracks connecting the grounds to the city center and surrounding regions.
Operations began on July 8, 1936, when a Ju 52 aircraft landed at the newly built site with its two-storey station building and six-storey tower. In the decades that followed, the infrastructure grew with new terminals, additional runways, and a connection to the long-distance rail network, making it the most important aviation hub in Germany.
Travelers passing through can visit several small museums, art installations, and food markets that showcase the traditions of the Rhine-Main region. Local shops and restaurants feature products from Hesse and neighboring states, giving visitors a chance to experience German regional culture during layovers.
The Sky Line is an underground automated train that links both terminals and moves travelers from one building to the other in a few minutes. Those transferring or switching gates will find many signs in several languages to help navigate the sprawling layout of halls and corridors.
The facility offers direct flight connections to 330 destinations across five continents, more than any other airport worldwide in terms of nonstop routes. This range makes it easier for business travelers and holidaymakers to reach distant regions without needing multiple transfers.
