Kleve, District capital in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Located near the Dutch border at an elevation of 12 meters, Kleve extends across 97 square kilometers along the Lower Rhine region.

The town received city rights in 1242 and served as the capital of the Duchy of Cleves until its annexation by Brandenburg through the 1614 Treaty of Xanten.

The Schwanenburg Castle, with its 55-meter tower Schwanenturm, stands as the central monument, connected to the Knight of the Swan legends.

The municipality includes twelve districts such as Materborn, Reichswalde, Rindern, and Kellen, each contributing to the town's administrative structure.

During the 17th century, Spanish forces controlled Kleve from 1624 to 1629, followed by Dutch occupation periods between 1629-1635 and 1636-1672.
