The Philippi Collection, Religious headwear museum in Tholey, Germany.
The Philippi Collection displays over 500 religious headpieces from Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Caodaism, Shintoism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. The museum also features papal shoes, gloves, pectoral crosses, and rings that mark rank and function within different faith communities.
Collector Dieter Philippi started by purchasing a cardinal's biretta in Rome and built the collection over twelve years. What began as a personal interest grew into one of the most comprehensive collections of religious headwear in the world.
The museum displays headwear from Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and other world religions, showing how believers express their faith through what they wear on their heads. Each piece reveals the role these coverings play in religious life and ceremonies.
Visitors can view the collection with detailed explanations throughout the museum and should check ahead for visiting conditions. The rooms are easy to walk through and the displays are clearly organized.
The collection includes 52 handcrafted pectoral cords worn by dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church. These intricate cords showcase craftsmanship techniques rarely seen outside religious contexts.
