Öhringen, Administrative center in Hohenlohe, Germany
Öhringen is an administrative center in the Hohenlohe region of Baden-Württemberg, extending along the Ohrn River between gentle hills and fields. The old town arranges itself around an open market square with a Renaissance town hall, while residential neighborhoods and commercial areas occupy the outer zones.
The Romans founded a settlement called Vicus Aurelii here, with remains discovered during excavations near the present center. In the Middle Ages the place developed into a market town and later became an administrative seat for the region.
The summer kitchen festival brings chefs and farmers from the surrounding Hohenlohe countryside into the center, where they present the tradition of local recipes and ingredients. Visitors can taste at the stalls and see how the community celebrates its connection to the rural landscape.
The railway station offers connections toward Schwäbisch Hall and Crailsheim with regular train service during the week. Pedestrians reach the market square from the station in about ten minutes through the main street.
During the 2006 World Cup the Australian national team chose this town as their training base, which brought encounters between the players and residents in the streets and cafés. Signs and souvenirs from those weeks can still be seen in some places.
