Kleiner Arbersee, Glacial lake in Lohberg, Germany
Kleiner Arbersee is a glacial lake in the Bavarian Forest mountains with an elongated shape measuring roughly 550 meters long and 50 meters wide. The water sits at about 920 meters elevation and is surrounded by dense forest that slopes steeply down to its edge.
The lake formed during the last Ice Age when glaciers carved out the valley and later melted away. In 1880, the water was impounded by dam construction, making the lake significantly deeper and larger.
The lake takes its name from the nearby Arber peak and serves as a destination for walkers drawn to the quiet forest landscape. This spot appeals to visitors seeking solitude in the mountain terrain.
Visitors can reach the lake via hiking trails starting from parking areas and mountain huts in the area. A footpath circles the water and allows for different routes depending on time and fitness level.
The lake is home to three floating islands that drift freely across the surface, held together by root systems extending deep into the water. These natural rafts formed from dead trees and plants that have become anchored at the water's edge.
