Kleiner Arber, Mountain summit in Bavaria, Germany
Kleiner Arber is a mountain summit in the Bavarian Forest, reaching around 1,384 meters, with a rocky outcrop at its top. It sits just southwest of the higher Großer Arber and is linked to it by marked trails through the forest.
A shelter near the summit, the Chamer Hut, was built in the early 1950s and first opened as a restaurant before being converted into a youth hostel within a few years. It now operates as a mountain refuge open to walkers.
A wooden cross stands at the top, a common sight on summits throughout the Bavarian Forest. Visitors can sign a register kept near the cross, a tradition that hikers in this region follow as a way of marking their arrival.
The summit can be reached on foot from Bodenmais or from Kleiner Arbersee, both with clear trail markings. Weather at this elevation can change quickly, so bring layers and check conditions before heading out.
The summit sits exactly on the boundary between Cham and Regen districts, meaning the peak belongs to two different counties at once. A visitor standing at the top is technically in both at the same time.
