Biggesee, reservoir
Biggesee is a large reservoir near Attendorn in the Sauerland region, with clear water and a wide expanse. The lake is surrounded by green forests and hills that stretch along its shoreline, creating a quiet setting.
Biggesee was created by damming in the 1950s to serve as a water reservoir for regional management. The project transformed the landscape and created a new setting for leisure and nature appreciation.
The name Biggesee refers to the Bigge river that feeds the reservoir. Today locals and visitors use the shoreline for walks, fishing, and picnics, making the lake a gathering place woven into everyday life.
Visitors can walk along the lake shore on many paths or rent boats to explore the water. The area also offers fishing, swimming at a beach area, and camping at nearby sites.
Near the lake stands the Atta cave with a steady temperature of around 9 degrees Celsius year-round. The cave is also used to age a special cheese that develops its flavor from these stable conditions.
