Biggesee, reservoir
Biggesee is a reservoir in the Sauerland region, located near the town of Attendorn in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The lake has an irregular shoreline with several bays and inlets, set within a hilly, forested landscape.
Biggesee was created in the 1960s when the Bigge river was dammed to supply drinking water to the surrounding region. Several villages were flooded during construction, and their remains can sometimes be seen when the water level drops.
The name Biggesee comes from the Bigge river, which feeds the reservoir and gave it its name. Along the shore, visitors can see how the lake has become part of daily life, with walkers, anglers, and families sharing the same paths and banks.
Well-marked paths run along much of the shoreline and are suitable for both walking and cycling. Boat rental is available at several points around the lake, and there are swimming areas and campsites nearby for those planning a longer stay.
A short distance from the lake, the Atta cave maintains a steady temperature of around 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year. This stable environment is used to age a special local cheese that develops its flavor directly from these cool, damp conditions.
