Deichtorhallen, Art and photography museum in Hamburg-Altstadt, Germany
Deichtorhallen is an art and photography museum with two large exhibition halls made of glass and steel. The spaces feel open and bright, with high ceilings that give works plenty of room to breathe.
These buildings began as market halls for commerce in Hamburg. In the 1980s, it became clear they would serve art better, and in 1989 they opened as a cultural space.
The halls bring together art lovers from around the world and show how much Hamburg sees itself as an international art center. Visitors come here to discover contemporary works and exchange ideas about current artistic movements.
The museum is near the central station and easy to reach on foot. The spaces are wheelchair accessible, and finding your way is simple since everything is laid out on one level.
The steel frames date from an era when such industrial structures were usually torn down rather than saved. That the spaces were later rescued for art shows an important shift in how cities thought about public spaces.
