Wasserschloss Speicherstadt Hamburg, Neo-Gothic building in Speicherstadt, Hamburg
The Wasserschloss Speicherstadt Hamburg is a red brick structure with Neo-Gothic details sitting on a peninsula surrounded by water on two sides. Multiple towers punctuate its corners, and the building's form creates a distinctive silhouette along the canal network that defines this warehouse district.
Built between 1899 and 1912 during Hamburg's expansion as a major trading port, the structure originally functioned as an operations center for the hydraulic systems that powered the warehouses. This period marked a shift toward modern industrial infrastructure in the city.
The tea house inside keeps alive the merchant traditions that once defined this warehouse district, with staff and customers moving through spaces that still feel tied to commerce and trade. Walking through the ground floor, you sense how tea merchants would have worked here generations ago.
The tea house inside opens most days and lets you sit with views of the canals while browsing tea selections. Early visits work best if you want quieter moments to explore and take photographs without crowds.
The building appears to float like a ship anchored in the harbor district because of how water surrounds it on two sides. This unusual appearance made it the most photographed spot in the entire Speicherstadt complex.
