Oberhafenbrücke, Double-decker truss bridge in HafenCity, Germany

The Oberhafenbrücke is a combined road and rail bridge over the Oberhafen in Hamburg. Its lower deck carries road traffic, while four tracks on the upper deck carry all railway traffic crossing the Elbe except the S-Bahn between Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and Hamburg-Harburg. The current steel truss structure, weighing 3,529 tonnes, replaced the original 1904 bridge in 2007.

The Prussian railway administration commissioned the riveted steel truss bridge in 1902, and it opened in May 1904, replacing the Hannoverscher Bahnhof's passenger role after the 1906 Hauptbahnhof. Because shipping had to pass, it was built as a swing bridge: the pivot pier, larger than the others, was driven by compressed air from a combustion engine and the bridge turned in four and a half minutes. In 2007 the 3,529-tonne structure was replaced in one piece, assembled on the former Hannoverscher Bahnhof site.

In 1992, for Rémy Zaugg's exhibition at the Deichtorhallen, large white letters spelling "Kanäle, Eisenbahnbrücke, Lagerhäuser, Schiff, Wolken, Himmel, Wind, Hafenkräne" were mounted on the bridge; after the 2007 rebuild the words were reinstated and read from the west. The Oberhafenkantine, a snack bar, sits on Stockmeyerstraße at the south bank, partly beneath the bridge.

Pedestrians use the walkways added on both sides of the truss; the lower deck carries road traffic with a clearance of 4.4 m, the upper deck four electrified tracks. The Elberadweg cycle route passes the bridge, and a flood-protection sliding gate stands at the Stadtdeich. The nearby bus stop named after the bridge is served only by night line 602.

The turning mechanism's pier is larger than the others and was left unchanged when the bridge was replaced in 2007. The rotating span, driven by compressed air from a combustion engine, could complete a full turn in four and a half minutes. Since 1992 white lettering reading "Kanäle, Eisenbahnbrücke, Lagerhäuser, Schiff, Wolken, Himmel, Wind, Hafenkräne" has faced west, reinstalled after the rebuild.
