Gartenstadt Staaken, Garden city residential district in Spandau, Germany

Gartenstadt Staaken is a residential district in Berlin-Spandau with approximately 1000 homes and public buildings spread across 35 hectares of land. Each house features its own garden, and the buildings display different architectural styles with plastered facades.

The area was built between 1914 and 1917 as worker housing for the nearby munitions factory, following the design of architect Paul Schmitthenner. Its creation coincided with Berlin's period of rapid industrialization.

The district was designed following garden city principles, showing how people were meant to live in organized communities with gardens for each household. The carefully planted green spaces and regular street layout still shape the area today, creating a residential character that feels separate from the rest of the city.

The district is located near Staaken station and is easily accessible by public transport. Most homes are privately occupied, so visitors can best experience the area by walking through the streets and squares.

Many houses display gable forms influenced by Dutch architecture, giving the district a distinctive appearance. These roof shapes are still clearly visible today and define the overall character of the entire neighborhood.
