Grimnitzsee, Lake in Spandau, Berlin, Germany
Grimnitzsee is a small lake in the Wilhelmstadt area of Spandau, Berlin. A narrow channel links it to the Havel River, which allows small boats and canoes to pass between the two waterways.
The name Grimnitzsee has Slavic roots, possibly connected to the idea of 'loud' or 'noisy,' pointing to early Slavic settlements in the area. Nearby archaeological finds confirm that the Heveller, a Slavic group, lived around the lake long before Berlin existed as a city.
The paths around the lake are flat and accessible on foot or by bike. Visiting on a weekday or early in the morning is more comfortable, as the area draws more people during summer weekends.
A bronze sculpture of the Greek god Apollo holding a kithara stands near the southern edge of the lake. The figure once belonged to a collection owned by a well-known German political leader and was placed here in the 1960s.
