Haus Klemperer

Haus Klemperer is a residential building in Dresden-Dölzschen with wooden walls set on a stone base and a traditional gabled roof topped with tiles. A partially underground garage added in 1936 serves as the foundation for the terrace and demonstrates how the owners made efficient use of the small plot.

The building was constructed in 1934 and reflected the building requirements of the time, as authorities substituted a flat roof with a traditional gable design. By 1940, the residents were forced to abandon their home and seek refuge in designated Jewish houses throughout the city.

The building represents the constraints placed on architecture during the 1930s, as authorities rejected the initial flat roof design in favor of traditional German styles.

The building sits in a residential neighborhood and is visible from outside, though it does not offer public access to its interior. The best view of the structure and grounds can be had from the public street.

Despite financial constraints during construction, the owners selected a timber building method that proved remarkably durable over more than eight decades. This material choice reflected practical decisions about the long-term value of the home.
