Haus Kliff, Medieval castle ruins in Hattingen, Germany

The remaining stone walls of Haus Kliff stand near the Ruhr River, marking the location of a former knight's estate and grain mill.

Count Adolf II von der Mark established Haus Kliff in 1335 to control the river crossing on the trade route between Cologne and Münster.

The lords of Haus Kliff served as local administrators and collected tolls from merchants transporting coal along the regional roads.

Excavations in 2006 revealed additional wall foundations, confirming the presence of a forecourt structure attached to the main fortification.

A decorated wooden beam from the original structure survives and is displayed at the Hattinger Heimatmuseum as evidence of medieval craftsmanship.
