Halbachhammer, Historical hammer mill in Margarethenhöhe district, Essen, Germany.
The Halbachhammer features timber-framed architecture with heavy beams and traditional joinery techniques, demonstrating medieval German construction methods.
Originally built in 1417 in Weidenau an der Sieg, this hammer mill operated for 500 years before Gustav Krupp relocated it to Essen in 1935.
The facility represents early industrial heritage through its water-powered hammer system, which transformed raw iron into refined steel products.
From April to October, visitors can watch forging demonstrations on the first Sunday of each month between 2 PM and 6 PM without admission fees.
The hammer mill resumed operations in 2010 after restoration, making it one of few functioning pre-industrial steelmaking facilities in Europe.
