Grugabahn, Miniature railway in Grugapark, Essen, Germany
The Grugabahn is a rideable miniature railway that runs through Grugapark in Essen, connecting different parts of the park along a dedicated track. The line has several stops spread across the route, allowing visitors to board or exit at different points rather than completing the full loop.
The railway opened in 1938 as part of a major garden exhibition held in the park, and its first trains were steam-powered. It was later converted to electric operation and has continued running ever since as a permanent part of the park.
Each train carries a name such as Angry Ant, Secret Love, Watchful Rooster, or Black Lena, giving every ride a slightly different character. These playful names are painted on the carriages and are easy to spot from the platform.
The railway runs during the warmer part of the year, so it is worth checking before visiting to make sure it is in service. Visitors can ride one way and walk back through the park, or hop on and off at different stops to explore at their own pace.
One stop was placed specifically at the Orangerie to make that part of the park easier to reach for passengers with mobility challenges. This means the railway serves a practical purpose beyond the ride itself, acting as a real means of getting around the park.
