Roland, Medieval stone statue at Halberstadt Town Hall, Germany

The sandstone Roland statue stands 4.27 meters tall at the west facade of Halberstadt Town Hall, holding a sword and shield with imperial eagle.

Created in 1433 to replace earlier wooden versions, the statue represents municipal rights granted by Otto III to Halberstadt in 989.

The Roland figure symbolizes the independence of medieval cities from nobility and features inscriptions with the year 1433 on its ceremonial belt.

The statue serves as the starting point for guided city tours and stands in its original location following reconstruction after World War II.

After the Roland in Bremen, this statue ranks as Germany's second oldest Roland monument and shares craftsmanship similarities with its Bremen counterpart.
