Roland, Medieval stone statue at Halberstadt Town Hall, Germany
The Roland at Halberstadt is a sandstone figure standing on the west side of the Town Hall, holding a sword and a shield bearing an imperial eagle. The statue reaches approximately 4 meters in height and displays the detailed carved clothing typical of medieval Roland monuments.
The statue was built from stone in 1433 and replaced earlier wooden versions as the city's confidence grew stronger. It was grounded in civic rights that Halberstadt had already received earlier, reinforcing the town's established authority.
The statue embodies the freedom that Halberstadt citizens claimed from feudal authority during the Middle Ages. Visitors can observe how this figure represents civic pride and remains a symbol of municipal independence that locals still recognize today.
The statue is located on the Town Hall facade and is easy to spot when visiting the marketplace. The location is central and often serves as a meeting point for those exploring the old town.
After the Roland in Bremen, this is Germany's second oldest Roland monument and displays craftsmanship that rivals its more famous Bremen counterpart. The statue was restored after World War II and has stood in its original spot ever since.
