Liebfrauenkirche Halberstadt

Liebfrauenkirche Halberstadt, Romanesque church in Halberstadt, Germany

Liebfrauenkirche is a Romanesque church with four towers standing at the western end of Cathedral Square in Halberstadt, built with three naves and sturdy supporting columns. The interior still shows design changes made in later centuries that added to the original Romanesque structure.

The foundation dates back to 1005 when a bishop established a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Most of the current building was constructed from the late 11th century onward, creating the structure visible today.

The church displays intricate carved choir screens showing biblical figures in relief, which reflect the skilled craftsmanship of medieval artisans. These decorative elements are still visible today and show how religious art was practiced in this period.

Access is usually possible on weekdays, but exact hours change with the seasons and should be checked before visiting. It helps to orient yourself beforehand or bring a map, since the church sits on a large square but nearby buildings may look similar.

This church is the only one in its region with four Romanesque towers, making it instantly recognizable among similar buildings. Inside, it also contains wall paintings from the 13th century that show how religious spaces were once decorated.
