Dom und Domschatz Halberstadt, Cathedral treasury museum in Halberstadt, Germany.
Dom und Domschatz Halberstadt is a museum set inside a Gothic cathedral in the center of Halberstadt, housing one of Germany's most substantial church collections. The objects on display include bronze sculptures, gilded altarpieces, embroidered textiles, and carved precious stones from the medieval period.
Construction of the current cathedral began in the 13th century and was completed in the 15th century, replacing earlier churches on the same site. The treasury grew over the centuries through gifts from bishops and local nobility who donated precious objects.
The treasury is considered one of the richest of its kind in Germany, drawing visitors who want to see medieval craftsmanship up close. The embroidered vestments on display give a rare sense of what religious ceremonies looked like in the Middle Ages.
The cathedral is located in the center of Halberstadt and is easy to reach on foot from the main square. Some parts of the building have stairs, so comfortable footwear is a good idea.
The cathedral holds a wooden crucifix from the early 11th century known as the Hezilo Crucifix, crafted to hang in a specific spot inside the building. It still hangs in that same location today, making it one of the few medieval works in Germany that has never been moved from its original place.
