Rathaus

The Rathaus is a two-story administrative building topped with a slate-covered tower and bell-shaped dome, displaying a large Imperial Eagle relief on its gable front. It now houses a police station, registry office, community library, youth welfare services, and legal assistance for displaced persons.

The building was constructed between 1907 and 1908 under architect Otto Mecke and served as the administrative center for Kray-Leithe until the district was incorporated into Essen in 1929. This marked a turning point when the independent municipal government ceased to exist.

The assembly hall in this building regularly hosts civil marriages and local meetings, serving as an important gathering place for the neighborhood. Visitors can sense the civic importance of the space through its formal design and the way people use it for community events.

The building remains in active use with various public services operating from offices inside. Visitors should know this is a working facility, so opening hours and accessibility may vary depending on which services you need to access.

The building is among Germany's ten best-preserved Art Nouveau administrative structures, retaining original features such as stained glass windows and carved wall panels. These fine details are often overlooked but showcase the craftsmanship of its builders.
