Riemer Park, Large recreational park in Messestadt Riem, Germany
Riemer Park is a large outdoor recreation area in Messestadt Riem, a district on the eastern edge of Munich, Germany, built around an artificial lake surrounded by trees. Two low hills sit within the grounds and serve as sledding slopes in winter, while sports facilities and play areas are scattered across the site.
The land that Riemer Park now occupies was home to Munich-Riem Airport until it closed in 1992. Work to transform the former airfield into a public green space took place between 1997 and 2005.
Riemer Park was designed by French landscape architect Gilles Vexlard, who used clear geometric shapes throughout the grounds. These lines and patterns are still visible today and shape the way visitors naturally move through the space.
The grounds cover a large area, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea, especially near the hills and around the lake shore where the path can be uneven. A bicycle makes it easy to cover more ground and is a common choice among regular visitors.
Once a year, the park hosts a midnight running race that draws participants from across the city and beyond. The course winds through the grounds after dark, giving runners a very different experience of the space compared to a daytime visit.
