St. Maria is a chapel in Limburg an der Lahn built with dark basalt stone facades and a gabled roof that fits within the old town's architectural style. The building was constructed as a modern addition next to the historic Old Vicariate, creating a dialogue between past and present design.
The chapel originated from a renovation project of the Old Vicariate that received approval from the Cathedral Chapter in 2004. Following completion, the building was consecrated in November 2012 and has since served as the diocese's new episcopal residence.
The chapel is dedicated to Mary and features a statue of the patron saint surrounded by twelve lanterns at its center. The stained glass windows by Johannes Schreiter depict biblical narratives and shape how light moves through the interior space.
The chapel is accessible through monthly guided tours that showcase both the episcopal residence and the religious space. Visitors should check ahead for current tour schedules, as these visits are offered on a regular basis.
Inside the building sits a historical winged altar from the diocese's collection, a piece from an earlier era. This altarpiece provides a glimpse into the church's artistic heritage of the region.
