Ehemaliger Friedhof, Cultural heritage monument and former cemetery next to Cathedral, Limburg an der Lahn, Germany

The Ehemaliger Friedhof is a former cemetery next to Limburg Cathedral with gravestones arranged along pathways. Mature trees and planted areas create a quiet setting that reflects the site's long past.

The cemetery lay before the cathedral's west facade and also along the strip between the north facade and the drop to the Lahn. In 1817, with Limburg at 2,585 inhabitants, the city was ordered to plan an enlargement; after rejected sites, it bought neighbouring plots in 1834. A new main cemetery on the Schafsberg replaced it in 1882, though family graves were still used into the 1920s.

The cemetery served both the cathedral chapter and the townspeople, as the cathedral was also the parish church. Since 1928 the strip north of the cathedral has been the burial place of the cathedral canons; Arnold Hensler created a crucifixion group there in 1931/32. Many family graves from the 18th to early 20th century remain, and since 1965 the grounds have been open as a park.

The site is located directly at Domplatz next to the Cathedral and is easy to find when visiting Limburg's old town. The pathways are walkable and lead through the grounds with its stones and trees.

The wrought-iron double gate at the entrance dates from around 1600 and was mounted when the grounds were converted into a park in the mid-1960s. The strip along the cathedral's north side has served since 1928 as the burial place of the cathedral canons; Arnold Hensler made a crucifixion group for it in 1931/32.
