Landschaftspark Wartenberger Feldmark, Landscape garden in Wartenberg, Lichtenberg, Germany
The Landschaftspark Wartenberger Feldmark is a 210-hectare landscape garden in northeastern Berlin featuring maple-lined paths, wooded zones, and open fields. The entire site preserves natural features and creates a gentle transition between urban and rural spaces.
The land was acquired by Berlin in 1883 and initially served as a wastewater treatment field before its transformation into a landscape garden between 2001 and 2012. This conversion marked the return of formerly industrial land to public green space.
The garden honors German reunification through a star-shaped field of cherry trees with a Japanese gate crafted by sculptor Wolfgang Stübner to symbolize peace. This peaceful installation invites visitors to pause and experience the meaning of this historical reconciliation.
The park offers paths of varying difficulty for different visitors and features diverse recreational facilities including skate areas and playgrounds. The best conditions for walking are found along established trails in the central park areas.
Scottish Highland cattle graze in dedicated pastures within the park and help maintain the landscape while educating visitors about traditional grazing methods. These animals are a rare sight in a Berlin park and show how modern green spaces combine nature conservation with agriculture.
