Lichtenberg, Borough in eastern Berlin, Germany
Lichtenberg stretches across ten neighborhoods in the eastern part of the capital and connects housing areas with green spaces, old factory buildings, and new construction projects. The area ranges from densely built streets to open parks, allowing visitors to move between different urban landscapes.
The borough joined the expanded city territory in 1920 and developed over the following decades into an important administrative and residential location. After reunification, many streets and buildings that had previously served as headquarters for state security underwent transformation.
The Theater an der Parkaue stands as the country's largest stage for young audiences and runs shows year-round. Many community centers and cultural spaces host regular classes and gatherings that shape daily life in the neighborhoods.
Several S-Bahn lines and the U5 link different parts of the borough to the center, making it easy for travelers to move between neighborhoods. Walking or cycling works well for exploring the areas, especially along the wide avenues and through the parks.
In the Friedrichsfelde section sits a large animal park covering 160 hectares (395 acres), making it Europe's biggest landscape zoo by area. Visitors encounter an exceptional variety of animals there and walk through sprawling garden layouts that differ noticeably from smaller zoos.
