Archenhold Observatory

Archenhold Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Alt-Treptow, Berlin, Germany

Archenhold Observatory is a facility in Berlin-Treptow housing multiple telescopes for studying the sky. Its main refracting telescope stretches 21 meters long and ranks among the world's longest instruments of this type.

This facility opened in 1896 as Germany's first public observatory dedicated to astronomical education. Albert Einstein delivered his first public lecture on relativity theory here in 1915.

The building sits within a green park that invites leisurely walks and offers a relaxing environment for visitors. Today, the place draws people interested in astronomy and how we understand the night sky.

Visitors can join guided tours and nighttime observations through various telescopes on the grounds. It's wise to check opening times beforehand, as observations depend heavily on clear skies.

The main telescope weighs 130 tons and earned the nickname "sky cannon" because of its impressive length. Despite its age, the instrument remains fully working and ranks among the world's ten most powerful refractors.
