Bade~museum norderney/Galerie Hans Trimborn, Maritime history museum in Norderney, Germany
The Bade-museum norderney is a maritime museum housed in a former indoor swimming pool building on Germany's North Sea coast. The building displays exhibits about the development of beach tourism and bathing culture across roughly 650 square meters of exhibition space.
The museum grew from initiatives by the Norderney Homeland Association's history and culture working group in the 1980s and opened in 2007. The collections document how the island transformed from a fishing village into a modern seaside resort.
The exhibition shows how beach holidays and bathing culture developed on the island through photographs and objects from different decades. Visitors see costumes, posters, and personal items that represent the lives of past seaside visitors.
The museum offers audio guides in multiple languages including English, French, and Dutch to enhance the visit. The spaces are well lit and easy to navigate, with clear labels and plenty of room between the displays.
The museum houses Europe's first wave machine from 1931, which generated waves up to 1.8 meters high in the former indoor pool. This device shows how early innovative technology was used to make the bathing experience more exciting.
