Leuchtturm Norderney, Maritime navigation tower in Norderney, Germany
The Norderney Lighthouse is a brick-built navigation tower on the island with a height of around 55 meters and an octagonal cross-section. Its lamp chamber sits beneath an observation platform that offers views across the island and surrounding waters.
Construction took place between 1871 and 1874, following requests from merchants in Emden and Bremen for improved maritime safety on the coast. The building became their answer to the need for better navigation aids in the region.
The lighthouse shapes the island's skyline and remains visible from many points around Norderney. Both locals and visitors use it as a natural landmark and symbol of the island's maritime identity.
Visitors reach the observation deck by climbing 252 steps, which requires a reasonable level of fitness. Access is available only during the warmer months, so checking local opening times beforehand helps with planning.
The structure transitions from a square base to an octagonal shaft, an unusual design for lighthouses of that era. This shape change allowed engineers to combine structural stability with improved light projection in all directions.
