St. Bonifaz, Modern church building in Neustadt, Mainz, Germany
St. Bonifaz is a modern church building in the Neustadt district featuring three naves, yellow plaster walls, and a rectangular floor plan. A square bell tower approximately 43 meters (141 feet) tall with buttresses forms the distinctive exterior.
The original neo-Gothic basilica from 1894 was destroyed during air raids in 1945. The present building was constructed in 1954 as a replacement on the same site.
The church shapes how the square in front of it feels through its simple design and open layout. Visitors can see here an example of modern sacred architecture that intentionally avoids ornament.
Access is straightforward and the building is open to visitors during worship times. Information about masses and events is available at the parish office at Bonifaziusplatz.
The bell tower houses five bells including the Christkönigsglocke, which produces a distinctive pitch. These bells come from the renowned Mabilon foundry and define the sound of the church.
