Gera, Fishing trawler museum in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The FMS Gera is a side trawler about 66 meters long with original equipment preserved from the bridge to the engine room. The vessel shows how fishing vessels operated with the maritime technology of the 1960s, displaying gear and systems throughout its compartments.
Built in 1959 at Peene Shipyard in Wolgast, the trawler served under the Rostock Fishing Combine until it was decommissioned in 1990. After years sitting unused, it was rescued and converted into a maritime museum in Bremerhaven.
The vessel shows how fishermen lived and worked through preserved cabins and work areas that reflect the demands of life at sea. You can see the spaces where crew members slept, ate, and spent their free time between fishing operations.
You can explore the ship on your own and interact with 17 multimedia stations using your smartphone or a borrowed tablet. The stations explain how the crew operated the ship and conducted fishing operations in the waters where it worked.
The original galley has three cooking stations where one chef and two assistants prepared all meals for the crew. This cramped kitchen shows how challenging it was to cook and feed everyone while the ship moved in rough seas.
