DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, International artist residency organization in Mitte, Germany
The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is an international artist residency in Berlin that annually supports around 20 artists working in visual arts, literature, music, and film. Participants receive monthly stipends, furnished housing, health insurance, and German language courses to support their stay and creative work.
The program was established in 1963 with support from the Ford Foundation to strengthen West Berlin's cultural resources after the wall was built. This founding responded to the need to sustain artistic life in the isolated city.
The gallery space presents works created by resident artists through exhibitions, concerts, and readings throughout the year. Visitors can directly experience the creative output of those working in the program.
Residents receive financial support, housing, and practical resources to carry out their work in Berlin. Visitors can explore the gallery space to see the works created, though it helps to check ahead for current exhibitions and opening hours.
Since its founding, the program has hosted over 1000 artists, including renowned figures such as Marina Abramović, Steve McQueen, Margaret Atwood, and John Cage. Many of these artists created significant works during their time here that shaped their international careers.
