St. Laurentius und St. Nikolaus

St. Laurentius und St. Nikolaus, Medieval church building in Sandau, Germany.

St. Laurentius and St. Nikolaus is a brick church in Sandau built with rounded arches and a cross-ribbed vault in the choir, displaying elements from various building periods. The structure shows different architectural styles that developed over centuries.

Dutch settlers and monks from Jerichow built the current building around 1200, replacing an earlier wooden church. That wooden church stood on a site that was sacred to the Slavic people who lived here before the settlement.

The church is dedicated to two saints, Lawrence and Nicholas, showing how different religious traditions merged in this place. The location held spiritual meaning for people long before the current building stood here.

The church sits along the Romanesque Road and the Elbe Cycle Route, making it easy to reach. It welcomes visitors during daytime hours and serves as a gathering place for regular community services.

The church bells hang in the southern sound windows of the open tower, an unusual arrangement from 1949. This visible construction shows how practical solutions shaped the building's later history.
