Herz-Jesu-Kirche, Catholic church in Pforzheim, Germany
The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a church in Pforzheim with an elliptical floor plan and a central tower. The exterior walls are made of golden-brown Cannstatt travertine limestone and topped by a flat dome.
The building was constructed between 1928 and 1929 and was heavily damaged during the World War II air raid on Pforzheim. It underwent complete reconstruction from 1948 to 1951, allowing the community to restore the structure fully.
Inside, you can see Wilhelm Müller's ceramic artwork titled 'Tree of Life' displayed at the altar. This piece visually connects the Christian themes of Good Friday and the Resurrection.
Visiting works best on days when services or public events are held and the building is open to visitors. Checking for current events and musical performances helps in planning your visit.
This building was the first modernist church in the Diocese of Freiburg, using a steel-concrete skeleton construction with brick infills. This building method was unusual and innovative for religious structures in this region at that time.
