Stadtkirche, Protestant church in Pforzheim, Germany
Stadtkirche is a Protestant church featuring a two-nave structure with the main nave seating around 560 people and the side nave accommodating approximately 440 people. Additional gallery spaces allow the building to hold larger gatherings on special occasions.
The current building was inaugurated in 1968 and represents the fourth church structure on this site. Three previous buildings had been destroyed by wars and fires since the Reformation, each time requiring complete reconstruction.
The church walls incorporate yellow sandstone from Stuttgart and red sandstone from its predecessor, creating a physical link between the building's past and present. This blend of materials tells a story of rebuilding and continuity.
The two-nave layout allows visitors to move through distinct spaces and experience different areas of the interior at their own pace. Taking time to observe the windows and architectural details throughout the building enhances the visit.
The main nave features 111 colored windows designed by Wolfgang Kappis that transform the interior light throughout the day. An adjoining weekday chapel contains windows by Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen, offering a different artistic perspective on the same spiritual space.
