Bodenwerder, Municipality in Lower Saxony, Germany
Bodenwerder is a municipality on the Weser River in Lower Saxony's Holzminden district, serving as the administrative hub for the Samtgemeinde Bodenwerder-Polle. The town sits in the river valley where the landscape opens toward the water and offers access to the surrounding countryside.
The settlement gained town status in 1287 from a local knight and became an important trade point with a bridge built in 1289 that crossed the Weser River. This bridge connected major trade routes and shaped the region's economy for centuries to come.
The Münchhausen Museum tells the story of Baron von Münchhausen, whose family home was here and whose tall tales became legendary throughout Europe. Visitors can see how this local character became famous for exaggerated adventures that people still know today.
The town is easily accessible through the river valley and offers visitors convenient access to walking paths along the Weser. The infrastructure is geared toward travelers and tourists interested in exploring the surrounding landscape and regional attractions.
The name comes from the Homburg family, specifically one of the Bodos who started planning a walled town around 1340. These founders built a settlement with fortifications that grew into the town you see today.
