Stadtoldendorf, municipality of Germany
Stadtoldendorf is a small town in the Holzminden district of Lower Saxony, set among rolling hills and wooded areas in northwestern Germany. The town center is compact, with half-timbered houses, a market square, and a handful of older buildings that give the place its recognizable look.
Stadtoldendorf received town rights in the medieval period and grew into a trading point for the surrounding countryside. Over the following centuries, control of the town changed hands several times, leaving behind a mix of building styles and the remains of old fortifications that can still be seen today.
The name Stadtoldendorf contains the word for city, which points to a market charter granted to the settlement centuries ago. Walking through today, visitors can still notice buildings from different periods standing side by side, showing how the town has been in continuous use for a very long time.
The town center is easy to walk through since the main points of interest are close together and the streets are flat and manageable. Visiting on a weekday during daytime hours gives the best chance of finding local shops open and the market square in use.
Kurt Matzdorf, born in Stadtoldendorf, became an internationally recognized goldsmith and art professor whose work entered collections far beyond Germany. His connection to the town is easy to miss, as there is little local fanfare around his name despite his standing abroad.
