Alter Gleisberg

Alter Gleisberg is a limestone hill near Jena featuring rocky outcrops from different geological layers at a height of about 348 meters. The terrain spans several hundred meters and displays natural stone formations of archaeological interest.

Systematic exploration of the hill began in 1864 and uncovered traces of settlements spanning many centuries. Findings range from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, showing continuous human presence for thousands of years.

The hill served as a meeting point for trade and cultural exchange across different peoples over many centuries. Artifacts discovered here show connections to distant civilizations, particularly in southern Europe.

The hill can be explored via marked hiking trails that are accessible to visitors of varying fitness levels. Information about archaeological discoveries can be found at the nearby Löberschütz museum.

Most notably, the discovery of an Etruscan artifact from Italy with animal designs reveals surprisingly far-reaching trade connections of the region in prehistoric times. Such objects from such distance are rare in this area and highlight how connected the inhabitants were to distant lands.
