Alter Kirchturm, Medieval church tower in Meerbusch, Germany

Description

The Alter Kirchturm is a four-story structure built from tuff stone with Romanesque round arches and double arcade windows across its facade. The tower displays typical medieval construction methods and is defined by its distinctive window arrangement and decorative friezes.

History

The tower was built in the early 13th century and remains the sole surviving part of the original church following a fire in 1891 that destroyed the rest. This event marked a turning point, leaving the structure as a solitary reminder of the medieval religious complex.

Culture

The structure holds an oak door created by artist Joseph Beuys that bears names honoring those lost in conflict. This artistic element connects the building to contemporary memory practices that visitors can observe today.

Practical

The structure underwent major restoration work from 2013 to 2018 that included roof repairs and installation of falcon nesting boxes. This preservation effort ensures visitors can safely experience the building in good condition today.

Did you know?

Since December 2018, the building hosts quarterly concerts titled 'Art and Sound in the Old Church Tower' that take place within its medieval walls. These performances offer an unusual opportunity to experience music set against a backdrop of 13th-century architecture.
